Library Guidelines

General Policies

Food

  • When it comes to food, books hate it, bugs and mice love it.  Food and drink are allowed as long as students pick up after themselves.

Cell Phones

  • If you are there for a class or for study hall, cell phones are expected to be used responsibly.

Hours

  • The library is available for use 7:30am-3:00pm during school hours.

  • If you need to use the space outside the regular hours, please let the librarian know.

Lending Policies

Borrowing

  • Student's account must be in good standing to borrow.

  • Books check out for a period of 4 weeks and incur a late fee at the end of the semester if the book is NOT returned.  Fees are waived if the book is returned.

  • Books from other libraries might have another due date set by the lending library.  This will be noted on your check out slip.

Renewing

  • Items may be renewed 2 times if the items are not overdue and there are no requests for them.

  • You may renew through SHARE with your library card information or ask the librarian for help.

Interlibrary Loan

  • If there is a book we do not have, we can get it from another library.

  • Once you find the book through our Library Catalog, you can place a request with your library number and pin.

  • You will be notified via email once your book arrives.

  • You can also borrow movies from other libraries as well.

Collection Development Policies

Selection Criteria

Materials for the collection are selected and evaluated by the librarian.  The following are some of  factors considered:

  • Needs of individual students and faculty.

  • Relevance to curriculum or recreational value.

  • Accuracy

  • Format

  • Freedom from stereotyping, should present many points of view.

  • Interest and appeal to reading audience.

  • Content sufficient in depth and scope for purpose.

  • Reviews in professional journals and by professional organizations.

Weeding

  • Materials in the library will be evaluated regularly using the MUSTIE criteria as developed by Joseph Segal.

  • In all cases, weeding decisions ultimately depend upon the professional judgments of the librarian who is responsible for the selection of materials in response to the needs of the faculty and students.

Donations

  • The Brosamer Library is pleased to accept gifts and/or memorial gifts from patrons. Gifts are gratefully and willingly accepted as long as no restriction is placed upon their use or disposition.

  • Acceptance of gifts (of books and other library materials) will be determined by the librarian on the basis of their suitability to the library's purposes and needs in accordance with the library's stated materials selection policy.

  • Use of all gift materials will be determined by the librarian. The library has the right to discard any gifts that are in poor physical condition.

Review Policy for Challenged Materials

The librarian carefully selects and purchases materials for inclusion in the collection. However, there may be an occasion when a student, teacher or parent may challenge a book's relevance to the collection. In the case of a complaint, complainants will:

  • Submit in writing to the librarian the reasoning for the removal of an item.

  • Item in question will be pulled until a review is complete.

  • Librarian will review the item in question, and consult with the principal an dean of students with the final recommendation.

  • Librarian will provide a response to the complainant within two weeks.

Conduct
This can be summed up in one word "RESPECT"

Respect for Others

The library is a great place to hang out, and we welcome students to enjoy the space.  However, there are those who are using the space to study, so the level of noise should be respectful of those around you.

Pick up after yourself instead of expecting a different human to do it.

Respect for Books

You need to treat the library's materials well, or you will pay to replace any damaged books.  This means that you probably shouldn't shove a book to the bottom of your locker.  Avoid these "common" library mistakes as seen in the following video: Mr. Bean and Books

If books are put in the wrong place, we can’t easily locate them.  If books can't be found, we may as well not own them.  Do NOT attempt to re-shelve books yourself. Return a book to the librarian, to the return bin or leave on your table.   Do NOT place books on top of shelves.

Respect for Guidelines

Library books have a 4-week loan period.  You may renew the book longer if your are not finished.  If the book is late, then a fine will be incurred.

If you come to the library from another class you will need a pass.

All school guidelines apply in the library.

Chromebooks

  • Students may borrow a chromebook for use during the school day in the event their assigned chroembook is not available.

  • Students will not be permitted more than 3 loans per semester.

  • Loaned chromebooks MUST be returned prior to the end of the school day.

  • If a student's chromebook is damaged, it must reported to the librarian as soon as possible.  While it is being repaired a temporary loaner will be provided.

  • If a chromebook can not be repaired then the student will be charged $250 for a replacement per the chromebook agreement.
